There’s something beautiful about sword fighting. It’s a very complex, dance-like exercise. It’s such a joy to draw. Obviously, with a comic series called Legend of the Sword Bearer, there’s going to be a lot of sword fighting. To portray it with some degree of accuracy, I’ve had to learn a lot about swords; the different types of swords, the history of swords and sword-fighting, the various sword-fighting techniques, and so on.
Bran’s father, Douglas McNeil, was a champion swordsman, and medieval martial arts expert. He taught Bran how to fight with a singlestick, and Bran was planning on entering the historic fencing academy when he got older. He continued to train after moving to West Thorndyke from Scotland, and even started teaching Stumpy. After Stumpy complained that Bran “didn’t fight fair,” Bran started training with Daphne. Daphne practices various Asian martial arts, including one called Sinawali, which is very similar to singlestick. Bran also practices another sword-based art, but that’s a story for another blog post.
